Full Guide For iPhone Hacking and Rooting

Posted by Sahil Goyal
Our iPhone Hacking Guide section features download links to useful iPhone hacks, step-by-step activation, jailbreak, unlock, and modding advices, and more. For now we only have instructions for Windows based machines Mac OS X users, stay tuned for guides written especially for you. But before we go on to the guides, heres a little theoretical and general knowledge.

Why to hack:

#1: So you could use hundreds of free third party programs for the iPhone created by the underground community. By factory default all new handsets don't allow installing unauthorized third party programs before it can happen your iPhone has to undergo a process called jailbreak.
#2: So you could use any SIM card with the device. By default new iPhones are locked to one provider. After undergoing the unlock procedure your iPhone will be able to accept any SIM card. That can be handy for folks that dont live in the USA, UK, France, or Germany.

Why not to hack:

#1: Hacking will most certainly void your original warranty there were cases when Apple refused to service hacked devices. And if something goes wrong during the unlock procedure you might end up with a dead iPhone.
#2: Jailbreaked iPhones are more prone to security problems. While at the time of writing there were no real iPhone virii, the potential is there, as was proven by an iPhone trojan.
Now that you know the risks its up to you to decide whether you want to proceed.
Note: we do not take any responsibility for anything going wrong during the unlock procedure, but we do post only proven methods.

What is needed to jailbreak or unlock the iPhone?

#1 iPhone.
#2 Computer with a USB port, the USB cable that came with your iPhone.
#3 iTunes 7.5 and later on your computer.
If you have all of that, you can begin. Note: Windows 2000 and older Microsoft operating systems powered computers are not supported. And a lot of Mac unlock programs dont support PowerPCs.

Can your iPhone be unlocked (easily)? Checking iPhone firmware version.

At the time of writing this guide March 2007 - all currently released iPhone firmware versions can be easily activated, jailbreaked, and unlocked, using completely free software.
Currently supported versions range from v1.0 to v1.1.4. Just in case youre not sure what iPhone firmware version you have, follow the instructions below.

How to check iPhone firmware version?

Once you start up your iPhone in:
#1 Emergency mode == it was not activated yet, write *3001#12345#* and tap on versions.
#2 If your phone is already working on a valid ATT card, you can check the Settings -> About screen to see your firmware version to get the same information as in #1.
if your firmwares version is v1.0.0 through v1.1.4 (inclusively) youre in luck! Proceed to the next step.

iPhone firmware upgrade / downgrade (Windows)

Since youve got a brand new Out of The Box iPhone, its most likely to have the latest firmware version. However, chances are that you dont have the latest version. Or maybe you have the latest version but want an earlier one instead, for some reason. The best time to upgrade or downgrade your OOTB iPhone is of course before you actually get to hacking it.

As such, your #1 task is to find out what firmware you have at the moment. If its the latest one and thats the one you want to keep, skip the rest of the guide. If your firmware needs an upgrade (or if you want to downgrade it for some reason), read on.

Your second task is to download and install iTunes (make sure you select the Windows version).
Now in order to upgrade or downgrade your firmware you will need to press and hold your iPhones power (top) and home (next to the speaker, bottom) buttons together, hold them for around 15 seconds until your iPhone seems to have turned off, then release the power button while still pressing the home button. About 15 seconds later your iPhone will enter the recovery mode, at which stage you'll need to connect it to your computer.

As soon as your iPhone was detected your iTunes will be launched, prompting you to restore your iPhone. You can either click on restore to restore to the latest available firmware version, or hold down the SHIFT button and press on restore. The latter will allow you to manually select the firmware version youd like to restore to.

iPhone Activation (Windows)

By default, when you get the iPhone, it is not activated. As its known, one normally needs to use Apples iTunes in order to activate the iPhone. Since activating the iPhone via iTunes means signing up right away for a 2 year contract with ATT, T-Mobile, or whoever the service provider in your country is, some folks would rather not do it for various reasons

For those folks, there is a very simple solution out there.

This solution will work with any iPhone firmware version released before the end of March. Supported firmware versions include v1.0.0, v1.0.1, v1.0.2, v1.1.1, v1.1.2, v1.1.3, and v1.1.4.
In order to activate your iPhone, just follow these simple steps below:
#1) Download and install ZiPhone (make sure you select the Windows version). You will need to have Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 installed in order to run this program.
#2) Download and install iTunes (make sure you select the Windows version).
#3) Connect your iPhone to your computer via provided USB cable.
#4) Wait for Windows to find your iPhone you will see a message informing you that Windows found the iPhone.
#5) Launch ZiPhone.
#6) Click on Advanced Features.
#7) Make sure that only Activate option is checkboxed (i.e., uncheck all other boxes).
#8) Click on Perform actions.
wait for the operation to complete and youre good to go!

Possible problems: ZiPhone may display an error message and fail to run, or it may hang at the waiting for phone steps. If this happens, you should try the following:
- Make sure iTunes is shut down.
- Make sure iTunesHelper and any other services or daemons related to iTunes are not running.
- Upgrade to iTunes 7.6.
- Reboot your computer.
- If possible, try another computer.

Now that your iPhone is activated, you can already show it off to everyone although it still cannot make or accept calls. In order to accept and make calls your iPhone needs to be unlocked but only if you dont intend to sign up for a contract with your official service provider.

Note: this guide purposely gives instructions so as not to jailbreak your iPhone. For both activation+jailbreak instructions refer to the following activation+jailbreak guide.

YouTube / SMS / Phone / Visual Voicemail doesnt work right?

If you followed one of the unlocking guides and for some reason you cannot access YouTube, or your SMS or phone doesnt work right, while the program told you that the process was completed successfully, dont worry, theres probably an easy fix to the problem.
According to the original instructions included with ZiPhone, the first thing youd do in such a situation is reset your iPhones settings options by doing the following:
1) Tap on Settings from the home screen.
2) Choose General
3) Choose Reset (all the way on the bottom)
4) First try Reset Network Settings
5) The phone will reboot. If things still arent working, go back and try Reset All Settings.

If your phone or SMS still dont work right
1) Tap on Settings from the home screen.
2) Choose General
3) Choose International
4) Enter your language and/or region format.

If YouTube still doesnt work right
1) Connect to WiFi
2) Tap on Installer icon on your screen.
3) Tap on Install
4) Tap on proper Tweaks option (according to your firmware version)
5) Install the YouTube activator.

Everything should work just fine now!

If your Visual Voicemail still dont work right (ONLY for those using an authorized iPhone carrier = ATT in USA, O2 in UK, T-Mobile in Germany, Orange in France, etc.)

Launch the Phone application and click Voicemail. It will probably try to call into the voicemail phone number. If it doesnt tap the button to make it call. Let the call complete and check your voicemail. End the call, wait a minute or two, then try visual voicemail again. You should be prompted to enter your voicemaill password and Visual Voicemail will work after that. Some have had luck by changing their password during the phone call or rebooting afterwards. Of course, Visual Voicemail ONLY works with official iPhone carriers, so if youre using an unlocked phone with another SIM, this wont work no matter what you do.
If this still did not fix your problems, try and post your problem on our forums, maybe someone will be able to help.

And if you still cannot find a solution, probably the only option is to restore your iPhones original firmware and try the procedure again.

Restore, Repair iPhone firmware (Windows)

So youve tried all the different fixes out there, but your iPhone still does not catch a signal, does not want to accept or make phone calls, or simply doesnt work right after unlocking it. You tried everything, to no avail.

At this stage what you need to do is restore your iPhone to its original, unmodified firmware, and try the same process again.
In order to repair your iPhones firmware you can follow two ways: the short one, and the long one. The short one consists of a simple recovery mode which will only restore the firmware, while the long one will restore your iPhone to completely default factory settings (erasing all settings, programs, etc). To proceed:

Simple repair:
#1) Download and install ZiPhone (make sure you select the Windows version). You will need to have Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 installed in order to run this program.
#2) Download and install iTunes (make sure you select the Windows version).
#3) Connect your iPhone to your computer via provided USB cable.
#4) Wait for Windows to find your iPhone you will see a message informing you that Windows found the iPhone.
#5) Launch ZiPhone.
#6) Click on Advanced Features.
#7) Click on Recovery Mode

Now your iTunes will be launched, prompting you to restore your iPhone. You can either click on restore to restore to the latest available firmware version, or hold down the SHIFT button and press on restore. The latter will allow you to manually select the firmware version youd like to restore to.

The restore will take a while, so make sure your iPhone is well charged You really dont want it freezing in the middle of the process. Once everything is done, you can try the unlock process again.

If after trying to unlock your iPhone it does not work again, follow the same procedure, but this time around, after you restored the firmware and connect your iPhone to your computer and it asks you to sync your iPhone, do not sync it, and make a new profile. That should do the trick.
but if this fails as well, proceed to the DFU Mode restore (below).

DFU Mode restore
#1) Download and install ZiPhone (make sure you select the Windows version). You will need to have Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 installed in order to run this program.
#2) Download and install iTunes (make sure you select the Windows version).
#3) Connect your iPhone to your computer via provided USB cable.
#4) Wait for Windows to find your iPhone you will see a message informing you that Windows found the iPhone.
#5) Launch ZiPhone.
#6) Click on Advanced Features.
#7) Click on DFU Mode

Now your iTunes will be launched, prompting you to restore your iPhone. You can either click on restore to restore to the latest available firmware version, or hold down the SHIFT button and press on restore. The latter will allow you to manually select the firmware version youd like to restore to.

The DFU mode restore will take a long while, since all data from your iPhone will be erased As such make sure that your iPhone is well charged You really dont want it freezing in the middle of the process. Once everything is done, you can try the unlock process again.
Everything should work fine now.

Removing iPhone hacks (Windows)

Theres a few reasons to remove the iPhone hacks that youve applied for example, youve decided that a jailbreaked iPhone is too risky to have due to possible security threats, you dont need the unlock anymore since you signed up with the official iPhone carrier, or maybe youre about to return your iPhone for repairs or battery exchange to Apple (and theres been cases of Apple refusing to service hacked iPhones).
Removing the hacks is very easy:
#1) Download and install ZiPhone (make sure you select the Windows version). You will need to have Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 installed in order to run this program.
#2) Download and install iTunes (make sure you select the Windows version).
#3) Connect your iPhone to your computer via provided USB cable. Make sure your iPhone is well charged.
#4) Wait for Windows to find your iPhone you will see a message informing you that Windows found the iPhone.
#5) Launch ZiPhone.
#6) Click on Refurbish.

wait patiently for the operation to complete (Your iPhones screen will flicker and there will be code running on it its imperative that you let it complete what its doing. Make sure its well charged, as this could be a lengthy process!) and youre good to go!

Simple, wasnt it?

Upgrading previously hacked iPhones (Windows)

In case you already have a jailbreaked/unlocked iPhone with an older firmware which youd like to update to the latest one, most likely you wont be able to do it right away.

As noted by the authors of ZiPhone, the iPhone hacking solution these guides were written for, only a few of previously available iPhone hacks are cross-compatible with it, namely jailbreakme.com v1.1.1 iPhone hack, or oktoprep v1.1.2 iPhone hack. Most other solutions will not let you easily upgrade/hack your iPhone.

But dont fret, theres more or less of an easy solution for this you will need to remove these hacks and restore your iPhone to its original condition. Theres a few ways to do it Try each one until this does work.

First solution:
#1) Remove all old hacks through ZiPhone.
#2) Upgrade your iPhone firmware
#3) Proceed with the OOTB guides.
If this didnt work

Second solution
#1) Restore your iPhone to its original firmware via regular recovery mode repair.
#2) Upgrade your iPhone firmware
#3) Proceed with the OOTB guides.
If that didnt work

Third solution
#1) Restore your iPhone to its original firmware via DFU mode repair.
#2) Upgrade your iPhone firmware
#3) Proceed with the OOTB guides.

If that still didnt work
#1) Follow the above steps for restoring your iPhone.
#2) After restoring your iPhone, make sure that you treat it as a new iPhone = do not sync it.
#2) Upgrade your iPhone firmware
#3) Proceed with the OOTB guides.

If that still did not work for some reason, uninstall your current version of iTunes, and install the latest one.

If something is still wrong, try the same procedure on a different computer.

Still doesnt work? Check the troubleshooting guide included with the program.

Now if you tried every step above and your iPhone still doesnt want to work with our guides, were very sorry, but were all out of ideas. Maybe try our forums instead?

P.S. Keep in mind, that by doing restore you will lose your saved photos and songs/videos, so make sure you back that up on your computer. But after your restore, you can sync your iPhone with iTunes, and you should be able to keep all your phone numbers, notes, and SMS messages.
